I rarely share videos or music and I really don’t enjoy the auto-music that can be found on some blogs. I don’t ever write about songs or lyrics but today is a different story because the images and the lyrics to this one video moved me – and of course I wanted to share my experience with you.
My husband pulled me aside the other night and played this music video for me by Taylor Swift. It was the first time I ever saw the video or heard the song and by the end, I was crying. It was one of the best music videos I’ve ever watched and some of the most beautiful lyrics written. It’s a video completely comprised of raw footage from home videos of her life.
I saw myself in that little girl.
I saw myself in that daughter growing up.
I saw my own mother and our beautiful relationship.
And because I saw myself in that mother who was watching it all take place.
Memories of my own childhood immediately came to me and the memories I am making right now with my own children suddenly came to light. Yes, by the end of this video I was crying – crying because it’s the realization that my kids are growing up so fast and there isn’t a damn thing I can do about it…
Other than to hold my husband’s hand and recognize that we’re having the best days with them.

Twitter: ThetaMom
says:
Jen, I lost it at that part, too and that is EXACTLY the moment I looked at my husband and I was sad – sad because I feel like I rushed that time when they were babies away and sad that I wish I had video of them just like that. I am now going to be taking more photos and videos of my kids because I want some memory of them on film – just like this.

This is hard for me right now because I often feel I’m not giving my daughter the best childhood ever. She spends her time in school working really hard. After school is way too much homework for a first grader, in my opinion. Then we generally make sure she has time to interact with other kids or go to therapies for her autism. It’s really not a terribly fun life that kids should be having.
And you’re right. The time goes by so fast!
When do kids have time to be kids? Just wondering.

Cheryl, My heart goes out to you because you have so much on your plate – but perhaps a video like this reminds us the embrace the moments we DO have with our kids – even when they aren’t the best moments – because it DOES go by so fast…

this makes me want to go run to my kids and hug them. it also makes me want to get off the internet, forget social media and blogging and spend every moment with them. but then i know the stress would set in. learning to balance time with them, with time away from them to keep sane.
thanks for this Heather.

I am at a crossroads here.
I am not a fan of Taylor Swift. I think she is overplayed. While I think she is an awesome songwriter, I think her voice is quite lacking. I do not get the appeal of her and why she is so popular.
However, after reading your post and the comments, I really want to click on this video to see what it is about.
Twitter: ThetaMom
says:
I am not one to share videos on my blog but this was different. I think she’s a really talented songwriter – this kind of song pulls right at your heart strings whether you are a daughter or a mother or both.
I am curious – since you are not typically a fan of hers, what did you think of this video??
Twitter: aytgim
says:
I thought the song itself, the lyrics, were beautiful and a wonderful testimony to her mother. I did not and still do not have a close relationship to my mother so I had to take it as the perspective of being a mother. This embodies exactly what I am trying to do with my own children.
Adding the home videos made the song mean even that much more.
However, I am still not a Taylor Swift fan. =)

Thanks for sharing, you got me crying and it’s not even 6 am over here. I had never seen or heard this song before either. Makes me want to video my children today. I can’t remember the last time I pulled out the video camera.

Melissa,
That’s another reason this video got me crying – I don’t have so *little* footage of my kids on video and with today’s technology and the tons of stuff we do have, it’s a sad reality that we don’t have more on film {and I can’t get that time back}. This video made me realize I will be using my Flip Cam *much* more and hugging my kids a little tighter today.

And I can’t believe it’s the first time I am hearing it! I agree – a wonderful reminder!!
I normally absolutely HATE music videos. They generally totally ruin the lyrics for me. But this… wow. LOVE!!
At the end of every year, I put together a playlist that is sort of review of that year’s theme. This year, my theme in life has been Here and Now. Taking the time to love on my family NOW. Correcting my bad attitudes of frustration NOW. Not after this hard phase of life passes or when the kids are easier to handle (cause really… who’s to say that will ever happen), but right here, right now. This song is definitely going on this year’s playlist.
Thank you so much for sharing.
